About Chin Implants

Chin implants are an increasingly popular form of chin augmentation that can significantly improve facial symmetry and overall appearance. (1) Essentially, a chin implant is an FDA-approved semi-solid silicone device that enhances the projection and shape of the chin. The practice of enhancing the chin with implants has been around for decades; however, advances in materials and surgical techniques have made these procedures safer and more effective. They come in various shapes and sizes, allowing for customized solutions tailored to each patient’s aesthetic goals.

For men, the chin implant procedure can make the jawline stronger and more virile in appearance. (1) For women with weak or recessed chins or a poorly developed mandible, chin implants can improve the overall facial balance and proportions. (1) The incision for inserting chin implants is often done intraorally (from inside the mouth), allowing results to look even more natural without any visible scars or incisions. (2)

Benefits

Chin implants can provide numerous benefits to patients looking for chin enhancement. When patients receive a personalized chin implantation procedure from Dr. Salibian, they see improvements through:

  • Improved facial aesthetics: By enhancing the chin’s appearance, patients can achieve a more balanced facial structure that resonates with their aesthetic goals.
  • Defined jawline: A chin implant can improve the appearance of the jawline, emphasizing the strength of the lower face and adding definition to one’s profile.
  • Enhanced self-confidence: Many individuals report feeling more confident in their appearance post-surgery, especially if a weak chin was impacting their features beforehand.
  • Facial symmetry: Chin augmentation helps improve the proportions of the facial features, contributing to an overall sense of harmony in appearance.
  • Sculpting options: Different types of implants allow for personalized sculpting options that cater to specific aesthetic goals.
  • Long-lasting results: Thanks to durable materials and advanced techniques, chin implants can potentially provide permanent results.

Candidates

Candidates for chin implants typically include:

  • Individuals who desire a more prominent chin or jawline
  • Patients with a weak or recessed chin compared to their other facial features
  • Those seeking to improve facial symmetry
  • Individuals who are in good physical health.
  • Individuals who do not need dental arch manipulation procedures for dental occlusive issues or who have completed their dental and arch bar alignment. If patients need dental alignment for better occlusion, this should ideally be addressed before chin implant procedures.

Personal Consultation

A personal consultation is necessary to determine if you are a suitable candidate for chin augmentation. During this appointment, Dr. Salibian will review your medical history, examine your facial structure, assess your occlusion, and discuss your enhancement goals. This allows us to create a tailored surgical plan just for you. Please contact our office to schedule your consultation and begin your journey toward achieving the aesthetics you desire.

Preparation

Before undergoing chin implant surgery, you will receive specific instructions to facilitate a smooth procedure and optimized recovery. Preparation instructions may include:

  • Discontinuing certain medications, supplements, and blood thinners as directed
  • Ceasing any tobacco/nicotine use before surgery and throughout the recovery process
  • Arranging for a responsible adult to drive you home after the procedure
  • Planning for time off work for adequate rest post-surgery
  • Modifying your diet after surgery as the incision is usually done inside the lower lip

The preparation instructions you receive may include these steps and others that are more specific to your goals and medical history.

Procedure

The chin implant procedure begins with the administration of anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. To place the chin implant, Dr. Salibian often makes a small, inch-long, intraoral incision, which means inside the mouth; specifically along the gingival buccal sulcus below the visible portion of the lower teeth. A pocket is then created along the bony edge of the chin that is just tight enough to insert the implant securely in position. (2) There are various sizes and shapes of chin implants; some allow augmentation of the chin only, others the chin and mandible. Some implants can give a more rounded appearance to the chin and others are meant to allow a more square and masculine appearing chin and jawline. In addition to the available different shapes, many sizes are available for each shape to best match a patient’s facial and jawline size and proportions. The entire chin augmentation procedure usually takes about one hour. (2)

Semi-solid silicone implants are the most commonly used materials for chin implants due to their versatility and biocompatibility. Dr. Salibian can mold silicone implants into precise shapes, providing natural-looking results. Silicone implants also have a consistency that closely mimics natural tissue. Another common implant is made from a polyethylene material, which tends to offer excellent stability after placement. (3) In some cases, 3D printing technology can allow further implant customization. (4)

Submental Liposuction

In addition to chin implants, Dr. Salibian can sculpt the chin and jawline with submental liposuction. This procedure can enhance the results of a chin implant by further defining the neck area. Submental liposuction primarily targets submental fullness, which is when there is an accumulation of fat below the chin. (5) It is more commonly referred to as a “double chin.” Dr. Salibian can access these stubborn fat deposits with a small liposuction cannula and permanently remove these fat cells that cause this undesired fullness.

Recovery

After the chin implant procedure, it is normal to experience swelling and discomfort in the lower face. Important recovery tips include keeping your head elevated while sleeping to reduce swelling, avoiding strenuous activity, and attending follow-up appointments so that Dr. Salibian can assess your progress. Typically, patients can return to light activities after ten days to two weeks of recovery.

Results

Patients typically notice instant improvements in their facial aesthetics following surgery. As swelling subsides over the weeks post-surgery, the final results become apparent– showing enhanced jawline definition and facial balance.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

There are also a few non-surgical methods that can be employed to enhance the appearance of one’s chin. For example, dermal fillers like highly crosslinked hyaluronic acid-based fillers (HA) such as Voluma and Volux, can effectively improve the definition of the chin by adding natural-looking volume. There are also other semi-permanent fillers, such as Radiesse which consists primarily of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) microspheres, which add volume and provide results that continue to develop over time with multiple injection sessions. Dr Salibian prefers the use of HA-based injectable products as this molecule is endogenous to our skin and its connective tissue layers and is not a foreign substance. While injectable treatments like Radiesse and Voluma are effective, patients will have to continue to return to the office for touch-ups if they want to maintain their results. If patients are looking for more long-term results that require less maintenance, surgical procedures like chin implants and submental liposuction can provide essentially permanent outcomes. However, injectables are good alternatives for patients looking to “trial-run” their chin enhancement procedure or for those only seeking minor adjustments.
