About Injectables

As we age, the skin’s collagen and elastin levels gradually decline, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and volume loss. If you are beginning to notice forehead wrinkles, smile lines, crow’s feet, thinning lips, (1) sunken cheeks, and/or hollow temples, specially formulated injectables can address these concerns.

Thousands of patients have improved their appearance with injectables; they make up approximately 30% of nonsurgical procedures because they are convenient and effective. (2) In 2023, more than 3.4 million people received dermal fillers to improve their appearance (3) –just one of several injectable options available to refresh and rejuvenate the face.

Facial Contouring

Facial contouring is a non-surgical technique that uses dermal fillers to enhance one’s appearance. Dermal fillers can add volume in key areas to contour the face. We can address multiple areas of the face during a single facial contouring appointment to help you achieve a more youthful appearance. We can administer injectables to the cheeks, temples, lips, and more, depending on your goals.

Neuromodulators vs. Dermal Fillers

While neuromodulators and dermal fillers are both injectables designed to diminish signs of aging and enhance one’s appearance, there are key differences between them.

Neuromodulators, or wrinkle relaxers, temporarily relax the muscles responsible for causing facial wrinkles without causing a frozen or unnatural appearance. They work by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, a hormone and neurotransmitter that controls muscle contraction. Unlike dermal fillers, neuromodulators do not add volume to the skin. If you would like to increase volume, dermal fillers will be a more effective option for you.

We can also administer both dermal fillers and neuromodulators to different areas to help you achieve more comprehensive results.

Neuromodulators: Soften Expression Lines

Neuromodulators temporarily relax targeted facial muscles to smooth dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive movement. These treatments are ideal for the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

  • Botox® has a more localized effect due to its concentrated molecular structure, making it suitable for precise, targeted areas.
  • Dysport® spreads more easily under the skin, allowing for broader coverage and a softer result in larger treatment zones.

Both are widely used for diminishing wrinkles and preventing them from worsening, with subtle differences in how they diffuse and how quickly results appear. The onset of action of Dysport is faster, usually within three days, but both Botox and Dysport take approximately two full weeks for their full effect per unit given.

Soft Fillers: Flexible Volume for Natural Movement

Soft, low-density dermal fillers are ideal for areas with frequent facial movement, such as the lips, smile lines, and around the mouth. These fillers add natural-looking volume that remains soft and moves naturally with facial expressions.

  • Restylane® and Juvéderm® both offer soft formulations that restore subtle volume while maintaining a natural look and feel.
  • Designed to smooth fine lines and enhance volume in delicate areas such as lips.

Medium-Density Fillers: Balanced Support and Volume

These fillers offer a balance of volume and structure, making them versatile for facial contouring and midface rejuvenation. They are commonly used in the cheeks and around deeper facial folds.

  • Restylane® and Juvéderm® both offer medium-density options that provide noticeable lift while still allowing natural facial movement and softness.
  • Suitable for enhancing facial shape, restoring youthful proportions, and smoothing deeper wrinkles.

These fillers are often selected for their ability to subtly lift and restore volume without appearing firm or static.

Biostimulators: Long-Term Collagen Production

Biostimulatory injectables work differently than dermal fillers like Restylane® and Juvéderm®. Instead of adding immediate volume, biostimulators prompt the skin to rebuild collagen over time. These treatments offer gradual, long-lasting improvements in skin firmness, volume, and elasticity.

Sculptra® uses poly-L-lactic acid to trigger natural collagen production, helping to restore facial volume and improve skin quality over several months.

Candidates & Consultation

Suitable candidates for treatment are typically seeking a nonsurgical solution to address signs of aging. During your consultation, we will discuss your aesthetic goals and expectations to create a personalized treatment plan that suits your needs. Injectables are an excellent option for patients seeking non-surgical cosmetic enhancements or looking to complement the results of a surgical procedure.

How to Prepare

To prepare for dermal fillers, you should stop using retinoids for two days before and after your treatment. If you take any medications and/or supplements that thin the blood, we will provide specific instructions about how long you should stop taking them. We recommend that you arrive at your appointment with a clean face, without makeup or skin care products. You should avoid excessive sun exposure and schedule your appointment two weeks in advance of special events. You should also take good care of your skin and stay hydrated for optimal results.

Treatment Process

Before your treatment begins, we will cleanse your skin and carefully mark the injection sites. The duration of your appointment will depend on the area you wish to target. If you are addressing a specific concern, the procedure typically takes about 15 – 20 minutes. However, if you opt for facial contouring or require multiple injections, your appointment may last up to an hour. Afterward, you can immediately return to your daily routine, ensuring you minimize excessive sun exposure to maintain optimal results.

After Your Treatment

Following a dermal filler treatment, you may experience temporary skin irritation or discomfort. If swelling occurs in the treated area, applying a cold compress can help reduce it, and over-the-counter medication may be used as directed to ease discomfort. These effects are generally short-lived.

The effects of your treatment will vary based on the type of injectable you receive. Many patients find that their self-esteem improves afterward. Dermal fillers can last anywhere from several months to up to more than two years, depending on the specific injectable used. Neuromodulators generally remain effective for several months, with patients typically receiving maintenance injections three to four times per year.

A chemical peel is a special solution that exfoliates the skin barrier and raises your skin’s collagen levels to rejuvenate your skin. We offer chemical peels of different strengths to remove impurities from the skin. Chemical peels also stimulate collagen production to address signs of aging over time.

Laser Treatments

A laser facial can diminish the appearance of blood vessels and dark spots to help you achieve a more even skin tone. We can administer pulses of gentle laser energy to your skin to stimulate collagen production to refresh your appearance for beautiful results.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion exfoliates the skin by gently wearing away the topmost layer of the skin to reduce the appearance of scars, fine lines, and wrinkles for a smoother appearance.
